Sprint1

SDLC & Dev Tools

By the end of this onboarding sprint, students will be able to operate effectively within a modern software development environment and articulate how their work fits into the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). Students will set up and use core development tools (Linux, VSCode, GitHub), collaborate using industry-standard workflows, and iteratively build and document a personal portfolio site. Through hands-on practice with Markdown, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in a Jekyll-based workflow, students will develop sustainable development habits—embracing iteration, version control, documentation, pair programming, and responsible AI usage—while prioritizing breadth of SDLC understanding over depth of implementation.

Sprint2

JavaScript Foundations & Student Teaching

A key focus of this course is to make Web Games using JavaScript. Understanding fundamentals like control structures, data types, input/output, operators, classes, methods and parameters, basic inheritance, and documentation practices are essentiial. Students will be teaching lessons on these topics to their peers. Each student will be responsible for a portion of the lesson, a popcorn hack, and homework. Students will be graded on their teaching, the popcorn hack, and the homework they assign. Students will also be graded on their participation in learning from their peers.

Sprint3

Creating a game for N@tM

Part of the process of becoming technically proficient is going beyond fundamentals by taking on a project challenge while coding. A challenge with some vision, questions, AI research, and more allow amazing things to be accomplished. Our goal is to participate in N@tM with the other CS classes and other classes from the Electives Department. We should have a blog, progress in a game, and a series of lesson hacks to show off.

Sprint4

Ideating, Tinkering, Building and OOP

Explore the OCS GameEngine—a platform designed to make learning computer science both fun and accesible. You will work collaboratively, build games, and apply key programming concepts in a creative, team-based environment.

Sprint5

Advanced Features

The Teacher will be providing topics such as local storage, leaderboard APIs, websockets, platformer and more to add to the game. Students will be expected to learn these topics and implement them in their game.

Sprint6

An RPG/Platformer game.

Trimester 2 concludes with students presenting their project at N@tM. Each person within "Student Teams" will have their own specialty within the student project. Students should be able to talk about design, make a plan, code, blog, and present features of their portion of the system.
